Piggery Weaner Unit - Department Manager - Near Foxton

We are a high performing piggery running indoor grower and finisher operation, seeking a highly skilled experienced senior pig stockperson to join our small motivated team managing and responsible for the farrowing, nursery, and weaner unit.

Reporting to and working alongside the Farm Manager to meet and maintain targets whilst maintaining herd welfare. You will be confident in all aspects of piggery production, with at least 4 years’ experience of working in and 2 years senior or managing a piggery department. With experience of feed mill production, stock taking, ordering, and updating data, whilst maintaining the high standards of animal health and welfare within our unit for both stock and staff.

Essential skills: Experience of dealing with large livestock in a production environment, including at least 4 years pig production and sow management. With solid piggery experience, backed with level 5 or 6 qualifications in Agriculture and Pig Husbandry, you will have proven stock observation skills, and be able to inspect condition, identify health issues of animals, action improvement. Solid maths and literacy essential. Forklift and or tractor driving experience would be useful, although can be trained. A team player with drive to manage this area of the unit. Responsible, reliable, honest, self-motivated, good communication skills and not afraid of hard work with a sound employment record.

The management of the piggery works as a team and on a fortnightly roster which includes work every other weekend. This position requires that you have your own accommodation and transport. You would need to be committed to maintaining the high health status of the herd by having no contact with any other pigs, domestic or wild, and any pig material whilst in our employment.

This is a physically demanding job with lifting and carrying required; you must be fit for the duties required. The successful applicant for this position will be required to pass a drug test and police background check.

Rawhiti Environmental Park

Herd Manager

Nestled in the Te Aroha hills, Rawhiti Environmental Park is certified as New Zealand’s highest welfare pork. They have the strictest standards of animal health, welfare, hygiene and cleanliness. In addition to the farm, they also run a community waste recycling programme.

The role of Herd Manager has now become available. In this role you will be responsible for managing the care and growth of weaned piglets. You will need to have the welfare of the animals in the forefront of your mind at all times and will during the course of each day be tasked with: monitoring the condition of weaners; immunise and treat as required; manage nutrient levels; and clean stock pens and runs; maintaining hygiene standards at all times.

To be successful in this role, we are specifically looking for someone who has:
• Experience working with pigs;
• A flexible approach; and able to work well as part of a small team;
• Be physically fit;
• Ideally a tertiary qualification in Agriculture or Animal Science;
• A calm and patient manner when handling animals;
• Mechanically minded - able to make minor repairs if required
• Good written and numeric skills to record farm data and breeding statistics
• A passion for providing the highest welfare focus to the animals

Moorpork Oxford is a high performing team of 6 full time staff that is passionate about what we do.

We are seeking to employ an individual to fill the fulltime position of Head of Department (Farrowing) involving all aspects of pre farrowing through to weaning, at our modern Oxford site of 1000 sows, farrow to finish; farrowing 105 sows every 2 weeks.

Whilst this position is working primarily within the Farrowing department, you will be expected to help in other areas of the farm when and where required.

You must have
• 4 years previous piggery experience in an indoor unit with at least 2 of those years in farrowing department
• Ability to supervise people and provide instructions

We are seeking to employ an individual to fill the full time position of Senior stockperson in the Breeding unit at our modern West Eyreton site of 1000 sows, farrow to finish, running a 2 weekly batch system.

Whilst this position is working primarily within the Breeding department, you will be expected to help in other areas of the farm when and where required, as part of a 6 person high performing team.

You must have
• 2 years previous piggery experience, ideally in the breeding area
• A sound basic knowledge of AI and PCAI
• Good written and oral communication
• Knowledge of ESF’s and some experience with them is advantageous
• An ability to work alone, or as part of a team
• A permit to work in New Zealand
• An eye for detail
• A willingness to learn
• Already be located in New Zealand

SENIOR STOCK PERSON (Farrowing Department)

We are looking for a mature, positive person to join our team. The role involves working unsupervised and at times, having sole charge of the day to day management of our large outdoor farrowing department. Supervising up to 500 sows farrowing at any one time.

At least 4 years previous experience working in this area is essential and requires knowledge of the different diets required for certain ages and stages of pigs. Competency fostering piglets also important, as well the ability to identifying and treat sick and injured livestock. Experience driving telehandlers and other large agricultural machinery preferred and an enjoyment of working in the outdoors.

Assistance with other farm task will be required from time to time.

• Full NZ Drivers Licence needed
• Attention to detail and good time management skills.
• Physically fit with no previous injuries.
• Ability to work well in a team and alone.
• A Non smoker

Salary will depend on experience. Recent references will be required.

You will need to have the welfare of the animals in the forefront of your mind at all times and will during the course of each day be tasked with: feeding; maintaining body condition; maintaining a clean water supply; moving pigs; maintaining and defining farrowing numbers; oestrus detection and mating or use of AI. In addition you will do pregnancy testing, routine vaccinations and follow strict farm bio security controls.

• Experience working with pigs ideally with AI experience;

We are seeking an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to work with our piggery team.

The piggery is located approx. 10 minutes from Foxton and 20 minutes from Palmerston North.

This position is fulltime and the role is general farmhand. Primary duties involve mixing the feed meals and assisting the piggery manager with the day to day maintenance activities.
