An awesome opportunity for a qualified and experienced Environmental Advisor to join NZPork. NZPork is the statutory industry board that works to support New Zealand’s commercial pig farmers. We ensure that the interests of the industry are represented where environmental issues or regulations are concerned. We do this by:

  • Maintaining leadership and environmental stewardship
  • Reducing the cost of compliance

Each of our farming styles face different challenges, and we work to ensure our farmers understand compliance requirements regarding nutrient management, water quality, climate change, effluent systems and waste management.

The role:

Working in conjunction with the Senior Environmental Advisor, you will:

  • Be responsible for keeping up to date with national laws, regional plans and city/district plans and associated compliance requirements relevant to pig farming.
  • Delivery of submissions to central government, regional and district/city councils
  • Liaise with other industry experts to develop resources for our farmers
  • Participate in a number of national and regional environmental groups
  • Provide leadership as well as practical advice
  • Communicate regularly with our farmers.

About You:

  • Hold a tertiary level environmental or planning qualification, coupled with practical experience
  • A minimum of 2-3 years experience required
  • An appreciation for the New Zealand farming industry

Are you looking for an opportunity to use your stock skills while developing yourself with the support of your employers? This role is perfect for a young person looking to broaden their experience before moving into a higher on-farm or rural professional role. It is a great opportunity to gain experience in a little-known industry with a high performing system that thrives on production efficiencies while maintaining extremely high animal welfare standards. You will be surrounded by passionate members of the pork industry and encouraged to take big strides forward in your career.

This family farm has a mix of pork and beef production and the fulltime role can be either permanent or fixed term to suit your requirements. We provide full training and support so pig experience isn’t essential, solid stock sense and a positive attitude will be enough. The role will be active support of our stock manager with quad bike use and a small amount of tractor driving. It is a varied role with no two days ever the same as part of a tight team.

Duties involve care of stock but the role will grow and develop with responsibility as you do. While you are working here with us we would like to develop you further by supporting your off-farm training with complementary courses. We also like to support your interests so there can be flexibility to the role.

The start date is ideally 1 February 2021

Our normal working week is 40 hours in total and the working days are Monday-Friday 7.30am-4pm. There is rostered weekend work of approx. 2 hours every 2nd or 3rd weekend.

The salary range is $45-55k depending on experience and skill level.

Seeking Head of Department (Grower/Finisher)

An opportunity has arisen for a position within the Grower/Finisher unit at our Oxford farm.

We currently operate a 1400 sow, modern, high tech, high health, farrow to finish, indoor piggery business with 2 sites located South West of Christchurch; and West of Christchurch.

Oxford is a high performing team of 6 full time staff that is passionate about what we do.

We are seeking to employ an individual to fill the fulltime position of Head of Department (Grower/Finisher) involving all aspects of Nursery to Finisher, running a 2 weekly batch system.

Whilst this position is primarily within the Grower/Finisher department, you will be expected to help in other areas of the farm when and where required.

You must have

  • 3 years previous piggery experience in an indoor unit with at least 2 of those years in Grower/Finisher department
  • Ability to supervise people in the Grower/Finisher area and provide instructions
  • A sound understanding and knowledge of post weaning requirements
  • An ability to make sound decisions around culling
  • Excellent skills in identifying and treating animals that require attention, as per farm protocols
  • Ability to run the Grower/Finisher area on a day to day basis, with 1 other staff member
  • Excellent monitoring, recording and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Experience with selecting pigs at a suitable weight range for market visually

Herd Manager

Nestled in the Te Aroha hills, Rawhiti Environmental Park is certified as New Zealand’s highest welfare pork. They have the strictest standards of animal health, welfare, hygiene and cleanliness. In addition to the farm, they also run a community waste recycling programme.

The role of Herd Manager has now become available. In this role you will be responsible for managing the care and growth of weaned piglets. You will need to have the welfare of the animals in the forefront of your mind at all times and will during the course of each day be tasked with: monitoring the condition of weaners; immunise and treat as required; manage nutrient levels; and clean stock pens and runs; maintaining hygiene standards at all times.

To be successful in this role, we are specifically looking for someone who has:
• Experience working with pigs;
• A flexible approach; and able to work well as part of a small team;
• Be physically fit;
• Ideally a tertiary qualification in Agriculture or Animal Science;
• A calm and patient manner when handling animals;
• Mechanically minded - able to make minor repairs if required
• Good written and numeric skills to record farm data and breeding statistics
• A passion for providing the highest welfare focus to the animals

In this role you will be responsible for the artificial insemination (AI) of pigs and then ensuring the highest level of care during the gestation period. You will need to have the welfare of the animals in the forefront of your mind at all times and will during the course of each day be tasked with: feeding; maintaining body condition; maintaining a clean water supply; moving pigs; maintaining and defining farrowing numbers; oestrus detection and mating or use of AI. In addition you will do pregnancy testing, routine vaccinations and follow strict farm bio security controls.

• Experience working with pigs ideally with AI experience;
• A flexible approach; and able to work well as part of a small team;
• Be physically fit;

SENIOR STOCKPERSON - PIGGERY BREEDING UNIT

Ratanui Development Co. Ltd is an integrated farming unit, breeding and finishing pigs alongside lamb and beef finishing and cropping. The farm is high performing – always striving to exceed output targets through strong strategy, good governance and great teamwork.

We are seeking a Senior Stockperson to join the team in our piggery breeding unit, working with our breeding sows and new piglets. This full time, permanent position would suit someone with previous livestock experience. Pork industry or other relevant qualifications are preferred, as is qualifications or experience working with machinery.

Responsibilities include:

• Working alongside the Breeding Unit Manager to set and meet breeding and farrowing targets, and to maintain herd welfare and productivity Assist the team with the day to day running of the breeding unit piggery – including farrowing, weaning, mating and dry sow management.

• Working within a successful, motivated team on rostered shifts, including some weekend work and sole charge at times.

• Maintaining high standards of animal welfare, environmental stewardship and a proactive attitude to H&S.

Piggery General Farmhand

We are seeking an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to work with our piggery team.

The piggery is located approx. 10 minutes from Foxton and 20 minutes from Palmerston North.

This position is fulltime and the role is general farmhand. Primary duties involve mixing the feed meals and assisting the piggery manager with the day to day maintenance activities.

This position has opened up due to a long standing staff member retiring and has an immediate start.
