Herd Manager – Pig Farm

Location: Northland

Accommodation Status: Shared accommodation is available

Salary: $69,000 with agreed upon deductions of $200 per week for rent

Roster: Average of 50 hours per week, 12 on 2 off

Mandatory Requirement: At least 3 years relevant pig farming experience required

Applicants must have the following as per employer’s requirement:
• Must not have been previously convicted.
• Applicants must be physically fit.
• Applicants must be able to pass pre-employment drug test.

This position will be assisting the Farm Manager and Owners with the day to day management of daily farming activities in the Pig Unit so it is running at optimum efficiency and only top quality product leaves the farm gate. We are a smaller operation where good communication is vital for an inclusive team environment. We require you to have at least 3 years experience in pig farming and can demonstrate competency and skills in these areas:

Breeding – monitor breeding targets to match production target
• Can identify sows/gilts in oestrus
• Can identify optimum time to mate
• Can safely handle boars – semen collection, dilution, and storage
• Preform AI and pregnancy testing
• Understands Farrow Management
• Experience with Elite Herd Database – both recording and reporting functions

Animal Health – Can implement farm animal health plan and report on this
• Diagnosis and treatment of all routine animal health issues
• Confident in “Fit to Load” guidelines and welfare guidelines
• Accurate with treatments and recording of events
• Has confidence with moving animals with minimal stress

Piglet Rearing – to meet weekly weaned piglet targets and growth rates
• Knowledge of colostrum intake, split suckling, cross fostering, shunt fostering
• Experience with routine piglet treatments and vaccinations
• Understand growth rates and feed intake requirements at all stages of their growth
• Assist with selection of replacement gilts

Feeding – Can calculate feed demand for all stock classes.
• Experience with feeder performance and their correct operation
• Can repair all basic water supply faults
• Understand relationship between feed and profitability and Pork Schedule
• Monitor feed levels so there is always adequate level on hand

Effluent Management – Knowledge of compliance requirements with Northland Regional Council Consent conditions, and how effluent systems operate.

General Farm Experience – can safely use farm machinery
• Will follow farms Health & Safety Policy
• Will undertake scheduled Farm Maintenance

Herd Manager

Nestled in the Te Aroha hills, Rawhiti Environmental Park is certified as New Zealand’s highest welfare pork. They have the strictest standards of animal health, welfare, hygiene and cleanliness. In addition to the farm, they also run a community waste recycling programme.

The role of Herd Manager has now become available. In this role you will be responsible for managing the care and growth of weaned piglets. You will need to have the welfare of the animals in the forefront of your mind at all times and will during the course of each day be tasked with: monitoring the condition of weaners; immunise and treat as required; manage nutrient levels; and clean stock pens and runs; maintaining hygiene standards at all times.

To be successful in this role, we are specifically looking for someone who has:
• Experience working with pigs;
• A flexible approach; and able to work well as part of a small team;
• Be physically fit;
• Ideally a tertiary qualification in Agriculture or Animal Science;
• A calm and patient manner when handling animals;
• Mechanically minded - able to make minor repairs if required
• Good written and numeric skills to record farm data and breeding statistics
• A passion for providing the highest welfare focus to the animals

Gestation Manager

In this role you will be responsible for the artificial insemination (AI) of pigs and then ensuring the highest level of care during the gestation period. You will need to have the welfare of the animals in the forefront of your mind at all times and will during the course of each day be tasked with: feeding; maintaining body condition; maintaining a clean water supply; moving pigs; maintaining and defining farrowing numbers; oestrus detection and mating or use of AI. In addition you will do pregnancy testing, routine vaccinations and follow strict farm bio security controls.

To be successful in this role, we are specifically looking for someone who has:
• Experience working with pigs ideally with AI experience;
• A flexible approach; and able to work well as part of a small team;
• Be physically fit;
• Ideally a tertiary qualification in Agriculture or Animal Science;

SENIOR STOCKPERSON - PIGGERY BREEDING UNIT

Position location - 50 Te Rakehou Road, Feilding, Manawatu

Employment type - permanent full time

Ratanui Development Co. Ltd is an integrated farming unit, breeding and finishing pigs alongside lamb and beef finishing and cropping. The farm is high performing – always striving to exceed output targets through strong strategy, good governance and great teamwork.

We are seeking a Senior Stockperson to join the team in our piggery breeding unit, working with our breeding sows and new piglets. This full time, permanent position would suit someone with previous livestock experience. Pork industry or other relevant qualifications are preferred, as is qualifications or experience working with machinery.

Responsibilities include:

• Working alongside the Breeding Unit Manager to set and meet breeding and farrowing targets, and to maintain herd welfare and productivity Assist the team with the day to day running of the breeding unit piggery – including farrowing, weaning, mating and dry sow management.

• Working within a successful, motivated team on rostered shifts, including some weekend work and sole charge at times.

• Maintaining high standards of animal welfare, environmental stewardship and a proactive attitude to H&S.

Piggery General Farmhand

We are seeking an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to work with our piggery team.

The piggery is located approx. 10 minutes from Foxton and 20 minutes from Palmerston North.

This position is fulltime and the role is general farmhand. Primary duties involve mixing the feed meals and assisting the piggery manager with the day to day maintenance activities.

This position has opened up due to a long standing staff member retiring and has an immediate start.
