SFF Project 07/028 was jointly funded by NZPork and the MAF Sustainable Farming Fund; and supported by five Regional Councils. The project was designed to:
- showcase and support uptake of environmental initiatives within the industry in response to current and upcoming environmental challenges;
- assist those outside the industry to improve their understanding of a farming sector which supplies 50% of the domestic market for pork products, and which currently comprises less than 250 producers;
- improve collaboration with local government in support of sustainable pork production.
Farm Stewards
Nine farms representing over 20% of industry production participated. Photographic and written records of farm activities were compiled from a series of farm visits during 2008; and presented at three pork industry seminars in 2009. The presentations covered management philosophies, manure management systems and environmental initiatives.
