Introduction

The New Zealand Pork industry has a strong commitment to training and has some of the highest participation rates of any industry in the Agriculture sector. Courses are provided through the Agriculture ITO and supported by New Zealand Pork levy funding.

An industry training committee works with NZPork and the Agriculture ITO to set and review training courses.

Agriculture ITO Courses

Courses are available for Levels 2-5. Specific Pork Industry Courses include:

  • National Certificate in Pork Production – Core Skills – Level 2
  • National Certificate in Pork Production – Stock Person (indoor and outdoor operations – Level 3 
  • National Certificate in Pork Production – Herd Manager (indoor, outdoor and finishing) – Level 4

Prohand – Stockmanship and Welfare

Prohand is an internationally acclaimed course on stockmanship and animal welfare and is available through the Massey University as part of NZPork’s training initiatives. It is sometimes included as part of AgITO courses or can be delivered “on-farm” for small groups (3 to 6). For further details phone Graham Pearson at Massey University on 027 222 8378.
